Jonah Meyer - The US Review of Books
"Goodnight summer nights and bonfire lights."
A fifth-generation Southern California native, Haas, the author of this children’s book, offers up a delightful celebratory ode to all things Huntington Beach, known colloquially as Surf City. Capturing in words and bright, colorful illustrations the sights, sounds, and plentiful sunshine always in store for adventurers to the famous sand-and-surf locale, specifics of the seaside destination are explored and commemorated. These include, among other aspects, the famed Pacific Coast Highway, the International Surfing Museum, Pacific City with its multitude of ice cream selections, evening dusk falling on Main St., moonlit “thrills and spills” at the local skate park, Huntington Beach Pier, Central Park, and the nearby wetlands, which are home to abundant wildlife. Dedicated to the author’s grandchildren, Haas’ book recognizes many favorite spots and activities enjoyed during the children’s regular visits with the author and illustrator at Huntington Beach.
While the writing and illustrating of this special children’s picture book is clearly a sentimental and personal undertaking by “Grandma T,” it is equally true that any child—indeed any general young reader—would very likely find this title most enjoyable. Colorful, cheery, upbeat, nostalgic, and extraordinarily sweet, the pages within shed an attractive light and illuminating insider's look into the summertime joys of spending carefree, relaxing family time playing in the sand and waves. Haas has produced a one-of-a-kind celebration in the form of a children’s picture book, encapsulating the many joys and wonders of her particular “slice of heaven.” Yet even for young readers and adults reading aloud to small ones who have never been there nor have any connection to Huntington Beach, such summer fun commemorated in this book is sure to more than satisfy.
